The Art of Growing and Showing Carnations.

Carnation Growing.

We will start talking about Carnations at the very point where most Carnation Growers fail, the Perpetual Flowering Carnation, we cannot understand why so many people growing Carnations cannot grow the perfect plant. Its hardy to some point and can be flowered quite easy in a greenhouse with a minimum temperature of 10 Celsius.

Let us start at the beginning; probably no flower has made greater strides in the last 30 years than the Tree or Perpetual Flowering Carnation. Whereas only 20 years ago the varieties were few in number and comparatively poor, there now a vast number of sorts of great beauty, plants with long-stemmed flowers in many charming colours, flowers, too, that are very freely produced in autumn and spring and fairly freely throughout the winter.

Cultivation of the Perpetual Flowering Carnation is not difficult as mentioned before, if the grower has a greenhouse in which a minimum night temperature of 10 Celsius or so can be maintained during winter.

The chief difficulty experienced by amateur Carnation Growers after they have purchased the cuttings or young plants-is that of pinching or stopping the Carnation growths. This is necessary to induce a bushy habit of growth. The shoots are first ‘stopped’, this is done when they are past the shock of there first potting, this will cause several shoots to grow, the second ‘stopping’ is when the plants are nicely growing in larger pots.

From small pots they are transferred into 1 litre pots, and finally, when ready, into 3 litre deep pots.

To ‘stop’ a shoot one nips off the growing tip when lets say, the shoot is 3 inches long. From the end of April onwards the plants are grown out of doors in a cold frame that can be opened and closed as weather dictates.

From late May the young Carnation Plants however, can be planted into a sunny border ready to be lifted and potted into 5 litre pots early in September.

We must add that careful attention to watering and the occasional liquid feed will also be beneficial, as will the staking, tying and other cultural details needed to secure the best results.
If placed in the greenhouse in September the Carnation Plants will begin to Bloom in October, and continue to do so more or less throughout the winter and spring. In fact if planted out of doors in May they will give quite an excellent lot of blooms all through the summer.
